Hurricane season winds down at the end of November, and Houston's occasional hard freezes follow. October is a good window to catch small problems from summer storms before they turn into winter leaks.
Outside
- Clear gutters, downspouts and valleys of pine needles and leaves
- Look for missing, lifted or creased shingles from the ground with binoculars
- Check flashing around chimneys, skylights and walls
- Trim branches hanging over the roof
- Make sure downspouts discharge away from the foundation
Inside
- Check the attic for daylight, damp insulation or stains on the decking
- Confirm soffit and ridge vents aren't blocked
- Look at ceilings for new stains after the next rain
Paperwork
- Find your policy and note your wind/hail deductible
- Keep dated photos of your roof
- Note any storm dates if you suspect damage — claims have filing deadlines

Should I get my roof inspected after hurricane season?
If storms passed near you, yes. A free inspection can catch damage while it's still within your policy's claim window.
